Jekyll Island’s Driftwood Beach

// September 30th, 2011 // 8 Comments » // America

After a rainy stop in Savannah, we decided to camp for the night on Jekyll Island. I had actually never been, but from what I heard from friends and family, it sounded nice. The island is a state park so there is a $5 fee to get on the island. We planned on camping on the north end near Driftwood Beach. We rushed to make it in time for sunset and when we got to the campground, we were greeted by the cutest old man ever named Mr. Bennett. As our designated ‘host’ at the campground, he pulled up on a golf cart, welcomed us to the island, and then drove in his golf cart to show us our camping spot. (more…)

// September 26th, 2011 // 4 Comments » // America

New Orleans has probably been Abe’s favorite city so far. He went sightseeing, partied hard, and made a new best friend. Abe loved riding the streetcar and highly recommends it as a way to get around the city. (more…)

Snapshot from the car as we approach the canyon

Housed in the Lorraine Motel, it’s at the very site that Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. (more…)

Memphis: And Then There Was Sharon

The pink limo

We pulled up to a Memphis BBQ joint in a pink limo. [You know you’re in for a real treat when the story starts off that way.] Right inside the door, we paused for photos with a cardboard cutout of Elvis and then took our seats behind two Elvis wannabes.  On my left was a rather large woman decked out in pleather and to my right was none other than the woman we’d come to know as Sharon. Bottoms Up! Drinking Bourbon in Bardstown

Stella tasting bourbon at Jim Beam

We didn’t have to go far to kick off our US road trip. Right in my parents’ backyard is Bardstown, the Bourbon Capital of the World. Although I’ve visited bourbon distilleries on several occasions, this would be Stella’s first. (more…)
