Nothing Says Cheesy Like The Diamond Bali

// February 24th, 2011 // 7 Comments » // Bali

When I last left off, we were wrapping things up in Sanur and were ready to board a ferry to Nusa Lembongen. But, I can’t leave Bali behind without interrupting these travel tales to share with you an architectural gem I stumbled on while I was in Sanur. (more…)

Bali Road Trip Day 8-9: Men in Uniform, Not Always a Good Thing

// February 23rd, 2011 // 8 Comments » // Bali

With the windows down, a breeze blowing, and the sun shining, we waved goodbye to Amed. The weather was as blissful as it sounds, and with the exception of our still broken windshield wiper, it was near perfect. We made a quick stop in Amed so I could look at decorations from a Hindu ceremony. (more…)

Snorkeling in Salang

After reaching Amed on day 4 and settling into the village of Lipah on the east coast of Bali, we were ready for another day at the beach! The previous afternoon the beach was lined with boats, however when we woke up, the beach was practically bare. The boats soon returned to the bay from their early morning fishing trips, and it didn’t take us long to throw on our swimsuits and head down to the beach. (more…)

Bali Road Trip Day 2-4: Black Sands & Shipwreck #1

// February 18th, 2011 // 5 Comments » // Bali

Our first day snorkeling in Pemuteran was fantastic! The following day, after a humid run, we went down to Pemuteran’s black sand beach. Our guesthouse was actually a 5 minute walk from the beach, but we took advantage of the low-season and used beach chairs at a resort right on the beach. (more…)

Lauren behind the wheel on our road trip!

We left Ubud early in the morning. My friend was driving on the left side of the road for the first time, and we thought it best to avoid traffic. We loaded up the car and I had a detailed map of Bali, ready to play navigator for the day. (more…)

Ubud: Rice Fields and Rejuvenation

ubud_24

You may have seen the sweet Montage Monday photo about being rejuvenated in Ubud. Or, you may have read my chaotic transit story to get to Bali. All I know is that we needed some rejuvenation, and Ubud was the place to go! We got to Ubud during a writers’ conference, so it was quite busy. We lucked out and got a room at Wena Homestay. The couple who owned the place were really friendly, it had free wifi, the grounds were beautiful, and unbeknownst to us initially, it came with complimentary breakfast- banana pancakes. We felt right at home :) (more…)

The One with the Sunglasses

The ones with the hearts

I consider myself overall to be a responsible person (if we omit the summer in Hawaii and losing my bank card in Bali). And generally speaking, I would say I have good luck in the sunglasses department until I turned 25. (more…)

Montage Monday: Rejuvenated in Ubud (Bali)

// January 17th, 2011 // 14 Comments » // Bali, Photo of the Week

Jalan Kajeng is a street in the beautiful town of Ubud that is equivalent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Well, sort of. You can purchase a square as a way to help pave the street. In return, you can carve into it whatever you want. Many paved squares are purchased by guesthouses or restaurants to use as advertisement. But then others have clever messages, quotes, or words of love for Ubud. This one, in particular, struck me. First, because I think Ubud could heal many a broken heart (and no, please don’t bring up Eat, Pray, Love, because frankly, I’m tired of reading about it). Ubud is full of culture, great food, friendly people, and beautiful scenery. This square also reminded me just how many people travel as a means of healing. Now you may think I’m going to spill some dramatic, intriguing story about how a broken heart spurred my most recent trip, but it didn’t really. However, I think travel is not just about healing a broken heart, but also about healing the mind. Shannon Kirsty, whoever you are, I’m so happy for you.

Ferry ride: Passing touts on Ko Samui

After Koh Tao, we were making a beeline to Indonesia. And what a journey it was! Our guesthouse on Koh Tao gave us a ride in the back of a pick-up truck to the dock. Rather than taking a package deal trip to Kuala Lumpur, we thought we could do it faster on our own (can you see where this is going?). (more…)

Ahh, is that Lady Gaga on Koh Tao?!

// January 6th, 2011 // 14 Comments » // Thailand

Based on the title, I assume you’re looking to see a photo of Lady Gaga, right? Well, you will. Just a Thai version of her :) Our first night walking around Hat Sai Ree, a lady boy (transvestite in Southeast Asia) was handing out sheets of paper advertising The Queen’s Cabaret. I’m not gonna lie, I love cabaret shows! The following evening we had plans to go, but Lauren was feeling tired. To be honest, I was a little intimidated to go it alone, but was pleasantly surprised to see other solo travelers there and was happy that I decided to go. The show is free! The only requirement is that you buy a drink, and while they’re not cheap, I thought it was definitely worth paying $3-6 for a drink and an evening of fantastic entertainment (and a tip here and there). (more…)
