East Side Gallery Berlin

The East Side Gallery is an open-air art gallery painted on a 1.3 kilometer remaining piece of the Berlin Wall. Over 100 works were painted along the wall in 1990. Sadly, many of those were damaged due to graffiti or fading and several attempts at restoration were made. Though it was a struggle, in 2009, the entire gallery was restored to prepare for the 20th anniversary. (more…)

Photo Essay: Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp

I didn’t think it would be right to leave Germany without visiting a concentration camp. On my last day in Berlin, I boarded an hour-long train ride to go to Sachsenhausen. It is probably the most accessible concentration camp from Berlin and very easy to do on your own. You can take the S1 from Friedrichstrasse to Oranienburg, and from there, it is a 20-minute walk to the former camp. Upon exiting the train station, you can simply follow the signs through town. I remind you that it wasn’t exactly beach weather when I was there in November, however, I was actually very excited about transportation to the island. (more…)

When Stella and I left Neubrandenburg to head to Flensburg, I was so excited. I had traveled for nearly eight months, and while planning and organizing things yourself is exciting, it’s fantastic to leave it up to a local. Stella had prodded me to tell her what I would like to do, but I was quick to throw the ball back in her court. I wanted to see her hometown of Kollerup, but left the rest up to her. Two trains and five hours later, we arrived at a little train station near her village. Her mom picked us up and we made it to her home shortly thereafter. The next morning we set out to do a walking tour of her village. (more…)
