I’ve been thinking about incorporating a new series in my blog for a while because now that I’m back in the States, I have a case of wanderlust. So, on Saturdays I’m going to rattle off about places I’d like to go. Maybe I’ll find a travel buddy who wants to go to the same place or maybe you’ve been there and can give your two cents on the destination!

First up is Chamonix, a town in southeastern France. I first learned about Chamonix as a French student in high school. As a mountain region, it was home to the 1924 Winter Olympics and is also where you’ll see Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps. As you can imagine the scenery is postcard worthy in Chamonix.

I’ve done a little research online and in guidebooks and here a few highlights that are of interest to me:

-Do I even have to state the obvious? Skiing! I am not a world-class skier. Heck, I barely make it off the bunny slope, but I love to ski, and I can’t imagine what it would be like here. I may spend more time sipping hot chocolate in the lodge than skiing but at least I could say I’ve skied the Alps! I suck at snowboarding so I’d definitely have to pass on that activity.

-I’d love to visit Chamonix in the summer to go hiking. It’s one of my favorite activities, and there are trips for all fitness levels and time frames. I would love to see a glacier for the first time and and check out some of the mountain cafes en route. I prefer day hikes, but I think to do Chamonix justice, you’d really need to do a multi-day hike. (I’ll just need to recruit a hiking buddy who will also conveniently act as a porter as well!)

-Chamonix has several modes of transportation that allow for a day of sightseeing. You can take the Augille du Midi cable car up Mont Blanc for a view from the summit. You can also take the Brevent cable car which gives you a view of Mont Blanc. Alternatively, you can take the Montenvers train to view the Mer de Grace glacier. In the summer, this glacier has man made ice caves and sculptures underneath that you can visit. Umm, yes please!

-After a day of hiking and sightseeing I would like to dine at one of the Chamonix restaurants and if I have any energy left, maybe check out the nightlife in Chamonix. Dining on French cuisine is a must for me, at least once during a visit here. I’m dreaming of brie, croissants, quiche, crepes… so many delicious items to indulge in. However, I can assure you I will pass on the escargot.

-There is also a museum in Chamonix called Musee Alpin. Though I’m not a huge fan of museums, this one houses the area’s alpine history and is located inside the Chamonix Palace, an old palace hotel. It sounds like it could be an interesting stop while in the area.

I know there is also mountain biking, but did I miss anything that should add to my list? Do you have any tips for a visit to Chamonix?
