I was skeptical about Miami. My preconceived notions based on limited second-hand information were a far cry from reality. I expected all the signs to be in Spanish. I expected there to be little diversity. I expected an overcrowded beach. I didn’t expect so many topless women or so many wacky outfitted people. I didn’t expect the Art Deco architecture to be so well preserved. And, I didn’t expect to find such a fantastic Couchsurfing community. Essentially, I loved Miami!
We drove from Jekyll Island to Miami and waved to Hurricane Irene as we passed. We were worried about the weather but we only hit black clouds and rain for part of the way. As soon as we parked in front of our host’s apartment building, the skies cleared up and it was perfect weather for our entire stay. Here’s a few photos from the well-preserved Miami Beach. From Art Deco to Miami Modern, the architecture was fantastic.

Never stayed in Miami before. I have heard so many great things but no one ever mentions the architecture…. just the beaches, beautiful people, and nightlife :-)
I was born and raised in Miami (actually born in Miami Beach hospital Mount Sanai) and I am glad you loved it! It’s awesome. Expensive, crazy, full of flamboyant people with tiny little dogs dressed as children. I miss it sometimes. I miss everything except how expensive everything was! Love your photos!

I need to go back to South Beach and spend more time there; I didn’t get to see much of the architecture. Loved the beach, the shopping and the quirky people, though!
I really enjoy Miami too. The art deco is so cool and to me it really combines a lot of what I love about Latin culture with a lot of what I love about American culture…the best of both worlds!
Great post and pictures! I’ve been to Miami/South Beach a few times and love the food, architecture, and most of all the people watching! There’s so much character there and it’s amazing how well they maintain the buildings. I’d go back in a heartbeat.
